How To Clean A Sheepskin Rug

One of the many benefits of  Sheepskin Rugs is that it is self-cleaning and does not need to be cleaned regularly. With most stains, the best thing to do is to let it dry and brush it out.

However, if you do need to clean your sheepskin rug here are some tips to keep your rug looking its best.

Do not use hot water! If you spilt something on your rug, firstly you should blot the stain with a clean dry towel or kitchen roll to absorb as much as possible. Trying to wash a stain with water straight away will only spread the stain.

Once dried try vacuuming or brushing out the rest of the stain.

CAN A RUG GO IN THE WASHING MACHINE?

We do not recommend putting your sheepskin in the washing machine. Even on a delicate wool wash. The underneath of your rug might dry out reducing life span of your sheepskin rug.

SHEEPSKIN RUG MAINTENANCE

To keep your rug looking its best we recommend regular brushing it. Brush your rug with a wide-tooth metal brush. This can help to keep sheepskin fibres straight, fluffy and standing upright.

Giving your rug a little shake every now and then can help keep it looking full.

You can also vacuum your rug. Just make sure to vacuum with the growth of the fur. Use a standard nozzle attachment to ensure you don’t tangle the hairs together.

Keep your rug away from direct sunlight. This will dry it out and turn it more yellow.

SHEEPSKIN STORAGE

The golden rule to storing your rug is making sure it’s completely dry before storing and in a cool, well-ventilated area. If you roll it up with the suede facing outward it will protect the wool fibres.

Sheepskin rugs need to breathe, or they will dry out.  We do not store a rug in a bag or box. Do not wrap your rug in any sort of non-breathable material. Do not store in direct sunlight or heat.
